Uncle Boonmee is suffering from kidney failure and knows that he does not have much time left. He retreats to a country house in northeastern Thailand to await death in the company of his family. In addition to his sister and nephew, the spirit of his deceased wife Huay who cares for him appears, as does his long-lost son - in the form of a monkey creature with red glowing eyes who over dinner broaches the art of photography. Together, they set off on Boonmee's final journey to a cave in the jungle, the place of his birth. A water buffalo, a princess, and a talking catfish might suggest his past lives. Nature is both magical and concrete, and the sounds of the tropics fill the film, which is a sensory, immersive event, with eyes open or closed. (bik)
